The LCD Soundsystem phenomenon

LCD Soundsystem sucks.

This is a simple and reasoned opinion.
The music is simplistic, the vocals are annoying at best. The samples are somewhat good but completely overshadowed by
silly, shitty minimalistic beats and rhythms

So why did this guy win a Grammy? Has he bribed the The National Academy of Arts & Sciences? Does his music cast a magic spell on it's weaker listeners? How is it this travesty of modern music managed not only to stay afloat within this global industry, but to strive and reach such perverse success?

Of course those apprehensive of this viewpoint might rebut or accuse that this author is lacking in musical experience, taste, or simply prefers other genres to the refined art of "IDM". Such a position would nudge this author's credibility, or further make ineffective my statements.

Granted, that is possible. Sometimes one confuses their dislike of a genre with a specific artist and comes off as intolerant. Some music sounds good to those appreciative of it's genre, and sometimes is tolerable, regardless of the listener.

This is not that music. This is the most awful crap to come from any remotely famous artist, possibly with the exception of The Hold Steady.

Please post a reply regarding LCD Soundsystem. Please free the people such delusions of the quality of this artist. We know there must be more folks like us out there! Else, music may be doomed for the future.

LCD Soundsystem has one decent song, at most.

I have no idea why anyone considers them good, maybe if you're on a bunch of the best drugs they might sound good.

And are you suggesting LCD Soundsystem is IDM? Please, Aphex Twin would never listen to this shit.

Oh thank goodness, someone else feels this way about this terrible band.

They really, really are bad. I really liked Daft Punk is Playing at My House, which is the only thing I'd heard by them before I tried getting more of their music. EVERY OTHER SONG follows the formula: 1. Find a single annoying loop 2. Leave it repeating for three minutes 3. Record sparse, nonsensical lyrics into a two dollar microphone with as much background noise as possible 4. Repeat

I totally hear you.
I just don't get it.
It is truly a waste of digital space.

I'm glad someone else agrees with me on this. LCD Soundsystem is some of the worst sounding shit. Anyone else notice that the dude sounds like he's got a fucking clothespin on his nose when he "sings". And that he puts the sound "UH" at the end of every fucking word, makes me wanna smack the bastard.

Also, I wholeheartedly agree that The Hold Steady is utter shit. The music's not bad, nothing special... but the vocals make me wanna puke. Who decides to sing like that on purpose? It's absolutely horrible, that monotone fucking half-spoken-word thing. Why does he do it and ruin some perfectly ok songs? It actually makes me angry when I hear it. But people out there seem to be eating it up by the shovels full, just don't get it.

my friend recommended this group to me recently. ive listened through 3 albums and found 2 songs i could stand: Tribulations & All My Friends. I dont see what the big deal is, and am shocked that they are touted as a major attraction at lollapalooza and ACL. the music, along with the band name, is neither clever nor intriguing.

Yes, I rather have a pap smear than listen to LCD Soundsystem.

I can't fucking stand that repetitive keyboard riff in Dance Yrself Clean. My ears are abused by it almost on a daily basis at work.
It's an occupational health and safety hazard!

i'm watching them play Bonnaroo live on youtube right now, they are FUCKING horrible! bad singing(flat) on top of lame songs that do nothing original. the lead singer dude is some music producer, he also helped start DFA records a popular punk label. that's the reason they keep showing up, his fame is bought and paid for.

Anonymous said...

I agree. LCD Soundsystem is way too overrated. I like the song Tribulations - but that's about it. Most of his songs are longwinded and numbingly redundant and boring. Most of them just drones on and on with no tangible purpose whatsoever. It's almost as if the whole nonsense that is LCD Soundsystem's music was improvised on the spot. I don't see why Pitchfork would laud LCD so much! Pitchfork gave all of LCD's music high marks (at least 8.5) but gave Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree a 4!!! And the latter album is way better! Maybe James Murphy (aka LCD Soundsystem) is fucking someone with a lot of clout in Pitchfork. Or maybe he blackmailed someone up there. These are the only reasons I can come up with as to why Pitchfork stupidly and blindly upholds LCD.

Whilst the LCD song "One Touch" is playing in the office:

me: This isn't my favourite song on this album

workmate: Which one is?

me: Guess. Here's a clue - It doesn't exist

Don't think about why LCD is famous too much because it will make you insane.

I think he sold his soul to the Devil. This is the only thing that makes sense.

Terrible music. Just awful.

You obviously have not heard to much bad music if this bothers you that much.

Also, to the other commentators who say they are SOOOO bad, please upload some of your music. I'd be interested to compare and contrast.

Anonymous said...

@ Justin:

Maybe you should join the LCD fan club. I had to search "LCD Soundsystem sucks" to find this thread so how and why did you find it? No one here is claiming to be a better musician than the talentless James Murphy, we just agree that LCD is about as bad as it gets.

There's bad music, and then there's music that is so utterly and pretentiously bad that it hurts... LCD is terrible and only a scenester with really bad taste would disagree.

i'm glad my music doesn't get airplay, because I would feel embarrassed to be played on the same radio station as this crap band.

Anonymous said...

So true, glad they're gone.

re: Drunk Girls
Its the same shit over and over again.

The most off-putting part for me is the combination of his not trying to sing with the way he affects his voice to make it seem like he is just riffing - like he just walked into the studio with nothing in his head. When we all know he has over-thought these lyrics to death.

I saw him DJ once and he didn't even attempt to cross-fade. So everyone stopped dancing for three seconds while they figured out what the next song was.

What boggles my mind is when friends tell me "yeah, I like electronic music...like LCD Soundsystem and stuff" or "oh, you like electronic music? You would like LCD Soundsystem." That's not electronic music, it's mostly crappy garage indie with occasional obligatory crappy casio riffs thrown overtop for hipster cred,

I don't get how anyone can like this stuff. It's not good electronic music. It's not good rock music. It's not good indie music. The vocals are horrible, the guitar riffs are boring and uninspired, the beats are not catchy or danceable, and the synths are simplistic and sound shitty. Whatever niche of music you try to put them in, there is better stuff out there, for example, Cut Copy combines indie guitars and synths/samples and still manages to write catchy songs with vocals that don't make your ears bleed (at least, on the recording) and electronic sounds that are actually somewhat interesting.

When I hear LCD Soundsystem, I can only imagine that someone is trying to sing awfully and make bad riffs on purpose. Somehow it appeals to certain hipsters, maybe because making bad music seems "ironic" and no one else tries to do it?

Amen...I would rather share a shower with Jerry Sandusky than listen to this crap.

Anonymous said...

ah yess the first time i heard this band juno randomly sent me some other dude's vinyl order, so i said fuck it and put it on to have a listen. damn for about five minutes it was like nothing was playing just stupid noise. i skipped ahead and it was the most boring fucking song i've ever heard in my life. then right now i'm looking up live shows at a venue i like and sure enough they suck even harder live, hence i had to find comfort that there are still those who cannot be fooled by this mindless drivel cheers to you all.

Anonymous said...

Music critics like James Murphy because he looks like them. Plus the "quality" of his music is something they might think they could make despite any musical talent, and they'd be right.

gretschbasher said...

I was hoping I didn't drink too much last night and turn retarded. I saw something online about LCD so I checked them out on YouTube, I thought " am I retarded or something? How did this band sell out Madison square garden? Are they really that bad? Or did I enter a matrix where good stuff sounds bad " so I googled LCD soundsystem sucks and THANK GOD! I'm not retarded or in a matrix, and they really do suck, and the reason they sold out Madison Square Garden is because New York City is full of a bunch of pretentious art hipster thrift store gistopo douchebags.

Anonymous said...

i don't get it. it's such garbage. and the stupid part is that it gets stuck in your head because it repeats itself so often

the guy is just talking so annoying. sometimes you're like "oh that's a nice beat" and then this humming and nasal talking goes over it and you're just looking for the skip button

i'm so happy there's data rock to lighten my day

Anonymous said...

Has anyone listened to dance music in there lives, the repetition is part of the song, like an orchestra,it has movements, not to mention he wrote and played all the instruments,I don't if your guys are all jerks or listen to house music all day

Unknown said...

Have you not listened to dance music, anyone one at all, the music it's in movements, like an orchestra, not to mention he wrote and performed all the music in the studio, what do you listen to our have listned to that is soooooo much better, his voice is incredible,I just sit here shaking my head!!!

No. 1984jns, no. This is deperate shit. My favourite radio show uses about 10 secs of the "All my friends" intro as their signature tune so like a clown I bought the album. Oh god. It is truly amazing anyone likes or buys or plays this or does anything except delete it and ponder the injustice of the entertainment world.

Anonymous said...

And BTW I love dance music. I love good beats, good hooks, good / memorable lyrics, good vocals, LCD isn't that. LCD is a moderately capable studo technician with a room full of equipment, a planet full of ego and next to no musical ability. He proves the point made by Roger Waters that electronic music IS art, because you can't just go and buy the equipment and make the music yourself, without any talent. For that service to humanity, he may live. But off that singing bulls*it, or else! :-)

lcd soundsytem is my da 2014

Completely agree. I have an Internet radio station, and need to go through and rid my playlist of their crap. If I have to hear the lyrics "Yo cities a sucka" one more effing time...

Anonymous said...

Wow I'm glad this thread exists. I never listened to them but I just had to suffer through their set, now that they've reunited, at Lollapalooza... it was soul deadening and it freaked me out how many people were absolutely reveling in this dreck. I had a very deep fight or flight response to the whole experience- I alternately had the impulse to either run for the hills and get as far away as possible, or start punching everyone there, band included. Blech.

I've felt this way since they announced the break up and played the Colbert report. Can I add Wilco to the list also

Oh, my God, are they awful. The old dude that thinks he's Bryan Ferry is totally off-key, and why is it taking so many people to produce muzak?

Live on SNL 5/6/17. First song was puzzling. Do I like it or not like it? Just thinking that made me think maybe I could like it. Second song was definitive. Meh, this is garbage.

Awful...just awful. Pretend Roxy Music minus any talent.

Anonymous said...

So pretentious.

They show up an hour & half after ticketed showtime at Brooklyn Steel to play a ten song setlist with six "encores." Talk about an elevated sense of grandiose. He needed a documentary to document their self-proclaimed "epic" five years of agreeable pop-tronic drivel into a much necessitated retirement.

What annoys me is how Murphy takes all these chances to express to media how he's close to "calling it quits," even though he never really made an impact with anything but a shallow fanbase of people who generally don't have a real spectrum of musical understanding.

I'm glad this blog exists.

Hit the nail on the head. He's in love with himself and his own mythology - it's so obvious. He probably fancied a break but needed the attention and the words written about him that come with a breakup, final concerts, comeback announcement, comeback shows and a comeback album.

Like he's a member of The Beatles or something legendary, instead of a band releasing weak, watered-down hipster dance music with mostly cringeworthy lyrics and unimaginative music aimed at the feeble-minded and easily pleased. Not the nadir of disposable American culture, but among it.

So the “documentary” is on Amazon Prime (free, because apparently nobody would pay for it, ) and I started to watch.
Then, I stopped, because it was awful.
Then I looked them up on the web, Grammy’s, great write ups, all kinds of gush.
So I let it go for a bit, then tried to watch it again, because I thought “Hey, maybe I missed something and this really is the greatest band I’ve never heard of.”
Then I turned it off again after a few more songs and Googled “LCD Soundsystem pretentious douchebags” and it took me right here.
I really can’t add anything that hasn’t already been so very well articulated in the above postings, but I’m glad to get some feeling of “Yeah, it’s not me, it’s them” (him, really).
Thanks for this blog/forum, I feel better now.

Saw/heard them for the first time last night in Glasgow. Within 24 hours I have felt compelled to seek understand what it was that I just saw? I needed to check - is it just me? Painful. As bad as it gets. Worse than Radiohead and Coldplay. This was not Blondie/Talking Heads/Roxy Music nor was it electronica. I have never seen a crowd look around so much to check that they were enjoying it at least as much as everyone else. Not enough to hold their attention I guess. Pretentious wank. In an attempt at balance I can only imagine that this a-fly-sucking-on-helium "music" is designed to sound good on a mobile phone. Also in the news the emperor has new clothes. Anonymous as I don't want to record I was there.

Anonymous said...

Yep. Don't get it. I hate to be the old fart, but today's music stinks! (Not all of it...just a lot of it)
No, this shit in particular - dunno that I can say much that wasn't said above. I watched a documentary about them selling out MSG and I didn't know the music so I thought, "hmmm, maybe they are good or at least interesting." They (he) are (is) neither. It all sounds very formulaic and smug. It is like so much crap out there that somehow gets a cool tag from the right people and everyone gets on board.

synth_ruiner said...

electronic music for people who don't like electronic music.

like they heard electronic music and thought "haha! I hate this! let's use it ironically!" then sought out the most bland, crappy electronic sounds and made every song a 1-bar loop because electronic music is repetitive am I right?

LCD Soundsystem is good. Everyone has opinions. This website's ironic. Fuck all these "I was born in the wrong generation" types but i don't know maybe i'm just a zombie to James Murphy's master scheme. Y'all don't know music, but then again, everyone has an opinion. And again, this website's ironic. Goodbye.

They have to be the worst thing I have ever heard. Even just the name LCD soundsystem... I avoided them on that alone.. so weak anemic.

Anyways, just heard them perform a song about NYC on the season finale opener of Ray Donovan season 06. The lyrics 'kinda' fit but not quite, Ray Donovan is edgy as fuck usually, and whoever chooses the music for the show, normally does a good bang up job to fit the scenes.... and the music in the song was extremely white bread stale and not performed well at all. This sounds like it's from an album cut, not live. His vocals whoever he is were , i'll use the term again, apathetic and not even singing. He may be trying to copy some of those Sonic Youth or Flaming lips failed indulgences of weakness.. but I don't know any of them. Funny blog post, I had to comment. I like your analytics. :) happy new year 2019

Welp, here I am…amongst good company! Have been hearing the most annoying fucking song in the world on the newest eBay commercials…I had to find out who this shitty band is and if anyone actually likes this crap.

I am absolutely baffled that there are actually people out there who think this is: A) Music, and B) Good…*shudders*
